Gluten-free while dining out?

I have never had a blog before, but I thought it would be fun to share some of the resources and recipes that I have accumulated over the last eight years in which I have been living gluten-free.

I think that the toughest thing about living gluten-free is managing the cravings for the awesome glutinous food that I used to eat before making the change to the gluten-free diet. Of course, some of these cravings (like ramen?! seriously!) are a bit inexplicable, and some are a bit more understandable like a nice fluffy, soft loaf of bread.

Another difficulty is that of dining out. The suggestions that I have to offer pertain more to dining out in the Denver/Boulder area, but I encourage sharing any suggestions that the reader has. These will be collected and posted in a resource that will be updated and posted to assist those traveling to areas for which a suggestion has been offered.

Please respond to this post with your favorite gluten-free dining options. This does not have to be a restaurant with an established gluten-free menu; it can be a restaurant that is willing to try to keep your food from coming into contact with foods containing gluten and do it without making you feel like an overly difficult person. In either case, specify whether they offer a special menu, or accommodate by special request.

Boulder has some delicious options for dining out gluten-free. Here are a few of my favorites:

Dessert:

Tee and Cakes
1932 14th St
Boulder CO
G/F menu: offer a g/f cupcake.

Amazing gluten-free cupcakes!
Be sure to call ahead, some days they make them, some days they do not but when they do make them, they disappear fast!

Glacier Ice Cream
4760 Baseline Rd
Boulder CO
G/F menu: not yet, but ask for an ingredient list.

Glacier has two other locations in Boulder, but this one is my favorite due to the incredible number of flavors of gelato and ice cream.

Dinner/Lunch:

The Med
1002 Walnut St
Boulder CO
G/F menu: yes

The Med has a gluten-free menu with several offerings. My favorites: any of the paella! They also offer killer salads (some hearty, others not so much) and any of the appetizers.

The Kitchen
1039 Pearl St
Boulder CO

G/F menu: not yet, but the waitstaff are attentive and so far so good.

Breakfast:

The Original Pancake House
2600 Canyon Blvd
Boulder CO
G/F menu: They have G/F pancakes on the menu and they are very tasty. Request eggs/bacon prepared on griddle with no contact with the sausage, regular pancakes, etc.

Burnt Toast
1235 Pennsylvania Ave
Boulder CO
G/F menu: No

Burnt Toast has an eclectic atmosphere. These guys are usually pretty good, just be sure to stress that you want your eggs prepared on a surface with no contact with other food or request whether eggs can be poached with apple cider vinegar instead of distilled vinegar.
I like to go for a cup of coffee, sunny side eggs and a bowl of fruit before.

Anytime: Need a snack?
Cup of coffee or tea and a piece of G/F coffee cake:

Brewing Market
2610 baseline Rd
Boulder, CO
(303 499-1345

1918 13th St
Boulder, CO
(303) 443-2098

2525 Arapahoe Ave # D4
(next to McGuckin's)
(303) 444-4858

Has Aunt Kay's G/F coffee cake.

Amante
4580 Broadway St
Boulder, CO
(303) 448-9999

1035 Walnut St
Boulder, CO
(303) 546-9999

Also has Aunt Kay's coffee cake, and most recently: gluten-free muffins!

Ozo Coffee
5340 Arapahoe Ave
Boulder, CO 80303
(303) 440-0233

Has a few different flavors of g/f coffee cake.

My nutrition counselor keeps a list of local GF restaurants:

I love eating at the Med (would eat there way more if I could afford it!). Their GF menu is as extensive as most restaurants' regular menus.

Lately the Vic's (coffee shops) in Boulder and in Longmont have been carrying GF pumpkin bread and some kind of cake, individually wrapped in cellophane. They don't do a good job of advertising it as GF, so be sure to ask.
